School Committee · Meeting of June 22, 2026

Newton School Committee approved a two-year elementary schedule deal with teachers. The committee voted 8-1, with one member absent, to ratify a memorandum of agreement with the Newton Teachers Association restructuring the elementary school day. Superintendent Nolan said the agreement, developed over two years by a Joint Labor Management Committee, gives elementary teachers more daily preparatory time, stabilizes specialist staffing, and extends Wednesdays by 15 minutes to meet a DESE audit finding on half-day lunch requirements.

Nolan called it "a triumph for NTA and NPS and school committee collaboration," and said the district plans a third-grade robotics pilot next year as one result. Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education Aisha Farag led the district's side of the negotiation opposite NTA counterparts Chris Walsh and Elizabeth Ross Del Porto.
