City Council · Meeting of October 5, 2026

Newton City Council postponed a vote to expand overnight winter parking exemptions to angled street spaces, 16-8, after concerns about commercial blocks in Waban and Newtonville. Councillor Lucas, chair of the Public Safety and Transportation Committee, said the amendment to Ordinance 19-175 would let the Traffic Council authorize overnight parking in angled stalls on Albemarle Road, Auburn Street, Beacon Street and Commonwealth Avenue. Councillor Block said he opposed it in committee because the language could let new parking elsewhere become eligible, while Councillor Getz withdrew a competing amendment so Councillor Baker's postponement could proceed.

Earlier, Mayor Laredo and Chief Financial Officer Maureen Lemieux presented a five-year forecast showing a $21.6 million, 7.38 percent increase in Newton Public Schools funding for fiscal 2027, while saying a pension obligation bond remains financially unviable, since taxable bonds would likely cost "5.5 percent or more" against the city's recent 4.21 percent school-bond rate.
