Finance Committee · Meeting of October 14, 2026

Newton Finance Committee approved $95,000 in workers' compensation settlements for two city employees. Kelly Brown, the city's Workers' Compensation and Medical Lead Manager, presented both claims: a $50,000 settlement for a retired working foreman with permanent shoulder damage from two injuries, and a $45,000 settlement for a 60-year-old school custodian hurt lifting trash into a dumpster. In the foreman's case, $10,000 goes to the Retirement Board to release a pension offset lien, $9,500 to his attorney, and $30,215 to him directly; Brown said the settlement lets him "go on his full pension" rather than remain frozen out by his workers' comp rate.

The custodian's attorney gets $8,400, with $29,800 going to the employee. Both items passed unanimously by voice vote, with no opposed votes or abstentions.
