The City of Newton announced details for its 2026 Halloween Window Painting event, now in its 27th year, in which students paint Halloween-themed artwork on merchants' windows across the city's village centers.

The painting will take place Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a rain date of Oct. 25. The event is open to Newton students in grades 3 through 8, who must be under adult supervision.

The event is again being run as a contest this year. Winners will be chosen in each participating village and celebrated at an event at City Hall, though the date for that celebration has not yet been set.

Participating villages are Auburndale, Newton Centre, Newton Highlands, Newtonville, Nonantum, Waban and West Newton. Each registered artist is assigned a space on the outside of a participating merchant's window to paint.

Registration costs $10 per child. Priority registration ended Oct. 12; after that date, a $5 late fee applies. Window assignments for everyone who registered by Oct. 15 are posted on the city's website, as will be the window assignments and eventual contest winners.

The city asked participants to read the event's rules and guidelines before the day of painting. Questions can be directed to culture@newtonma.gov.
