Newton panel approves single stop sign on Larchmont
Other Committee · Meeting of September 23, 2026
Newton panel splits the baby on Larchmont stop signs, advances Albemarle parking fix. The Public Safety and Transportation Committee voted 6-1-1 to install a stop sign only at Larchmont Avenue's busier north end, overturning half of a Traffic Council decision that had added signs at both intersections after nearly every Larchmont property owner appealed. Councilor Jacob Silber cited crash data showing 12 collisions at the north intersection versus three at the south in backing the split outcome; appellant John Ryan warned a sign would strip drivers' "protection" when merging onto Chestnut Street.
The committee also voted 6-1 to let Traffic Council designate angled parking exempt from the overnight parking ban, targeting unused spaces on Albemarle Road. COO Josh Morse separately told the committee the administration opposes letting Traffic Council grant street-by-street exemptions from the broader overnight ban, warning it "has a chance to divide our community significantly." Two Florence Street parking appeals were held without a new hearing date.
