Select Board · Meeting of October 5, 2026

Newton City Council postponed, 16-8, a proposed ordinance change that would let the Traffic Council exempt angled parking spots from the winter overnight parking ban. Councillor Lucas, chair of Public Safety and Transportation, said the change would affect spaces on Albemarle Road, Beacon Street, Auburn Street and Commonwealth Avenue, but councilors including Block and Getz raised concerns the draft language was too broad. Councillor Baker moved the postponement so the ordinance text could be clarified before the next meeting.

Separately, Mayor Laredo and CFO Maureen Lemieux presented a five-year financial forecast showing a $21.6 million, 7.38 percent increase in the Newton Public Schools budget for fiscal 2027, and said a pension obligation bond authorized by the council last spring remains financially "not viable," with taxable rates likely exceeding 5.5 percent against a recent 4.21 percent general obligation bond rate. The council also approved committee reports 23-0, with one member absent.
