Newton Board Approves Walmart Fulfillment Facility Under New Variance Law

NEWTON — A Newton board approved a 20,000-square-foot Walmart fulfillment facility under a newly enacted variance law this week, and a public lottery opened for more than 70 affordable apartments at the city's newest residential development, according to Newton Patch.

The Newton Free Library's 2026 Summer Reading Program continues for kids, tweens, teens, and adults through September 4, part of a slate of free summer programming at the Homer Street building. The library has also shifted to reduced summer hours, closing on Sundays through July and August while keeping its Monday-through-Thursday 9 a.m.-to-9 p.m., Friday 9-to-6, and Saturday 9-to-5 hours in place.

COMING UP

The Newton Free Library has a run of programs on the calendar this week: a Winnie-the-Pooh Escape Room for kids runs July 17-18, followed by Family Bingo and an adult Sing & Play session with Newton Folk Music on July 18. The library will close for the day on Sunday, July 19, as part of its summer Sunday closures.
