NEWTON — February 4, 2026 — Newton's Public Safety and Transportation Committee voted 6-0, with one abstention, to advance the mayor's appointment of Timothy B. Cahoon as chief of the Newton Police Department. Cahoon, a 30-year Braintree Police veteran who rose to deputy chief, fielded nearly two hours of questioning from committee members and observers on topics ranging from federal immigration enforcement to officer recruitment to mental health crisis response.
