Newton panel reviews revised senior-housing plan for Grove Street project

Newton development swaps hundreds of apartments for senior housing, shrinking garage by two floors. Mark Development principal Robert Corff told a Newton committee the project's conventional units will fall to 411 from 753 as buildings two and three become a 267-unit senior-living complex, cutting the main garage from 980 to 720 stalls. Corff said the shift eliminates roughly 70 affordable units and floated converting a separate 42-unit building into a fully affordable project funded partly through a payment-in-lieu mechanism he estimated at $6 million.
Greystar, the proposed market-rate operator, addressed a fair-housing lawsuit question, saying "there is no legal action in Massachusetts." Ward 4 Councilor Cyrus Domovid said "the idea of homes right by a train station is really exciting." The team plans a Design Review Team meeting Aug. 14 and a zoning-review filing by Sept. 1.
