Newton parking panel advances angled-parking expansion, deadlocks on shortening winter ban. The Public Safety and Transportation Committee, chaired by Councillor Tariq Lucas, voted 4-0 with two abstentions to explore letting the Traffic Council designate more angled and perpendicular overnight parking citywide, building on 25 existing spaces on Chestnut Street in Upper Falls. City Chief Operating Officer Josh Morse told the panel he identified 34 municipal lots holding more than 1,500 parking spaces that could be opened to permit parking before winter.
A competing push by Councillor Sean Roach to shorten the four-month overnight ban to two and a half months split 2-2-2, with Vice Chair Randy Block warning it "does not get at a fundamental problem" for residents without off-street parking. Councillor Andrea Kelly said police remain "understaffed" and permitting "may be a union issue." The committee tabled disability parking exceptions and street-by-street exemptions pending more data, and voted unanimously to hold the docket item at 9:47 p.m.
