Newton Panel Holds Nonantum Street-Sweeping Docket Pending Joint Finance Meeting

NEWTON — May 20, 2026 — Newton's Public Safety and Transportation Committee voted 7-0 to hold a street-sweeping compliance docket for Nonantum, unable to advance a fine increase while home rule legislation remains pending at the state level. Committee Chair Tariq Lucas (Ward 2) said the city's current fine of $25 per violation — issued 25 times on a single sweep date in April — is widely acknowledged as too low to deter repeat offenders, but raising it requires either Finance Committee action or passage of a home rule petition being monitored by city staff member Dana Hansen. DPW's Juanita Trabert defended current notification practices, including permanent signs and temporary sandwich boards, as adequate; Captain Devine of the Newton Police Department said a parking control officer is actively ticketing but that at least one auto body shop owner has told city officials the fines are "a cost of doing business." Lucas said he will schedule a joint meeting with the Finance Committee and Councilor Grossman to take up both the notification improvements and the fine increase simultaneously.
