Newton panel hears sweeping parking ban overhaul, votes only to pause discussion. The Public Safety and Transportation Committee, chaired by Councilor Tariq Lucas, heard a 19-page report from a working group led by former Councilor Chris Markowitz recommending a formal disability parking exception, expanded municipal lot access and a possible cut of the winter overnight ban from four months to two. Citation data showed 141 vehicles received five or more tickets over two years, one racking up 31.
Councilor Brian Golden called the report "terrific," saying "the city really owes you a tremendous debt over this." The committee voted 7-0 only to hold further discussion, with Lucas targeting a council vote by October to meet a December 1 deadline.
