Other Committee · Meeting of October 20, 2026
Newton's Land Use Committee held a petition to rebuild a non-conforming two-family home at 44 Rose Street, splitting over a disputed second curb cut. Architect Yefim Masarsky said homeowner Michael Ioffe's Parkinson's disease requires a step-free, elevator-equipped rebuild, growing the house from about 3,200 to more than 5,500 square feet. Councilor Randy Block said he would "have a hard time supporting this" over curb-cut safety, while Councilor Sean Roach countered that "land use is about human life." On a roughly 5-3 roll call, the committee voted to hold the item rather than approve or deny it, sending the petitioner back to redesign driveway placement with the Planning Department.
The Historical Commission has already imposed a demolition delay until June 20, 2027.
