Other Committee · Meeting of October 21, 2026

Newton's Public Safety and Transportation Committee voted 6-2 to recommend shortening the city's overnight winter parking ban. The panel backed moving the ban to a January 2 to March 15, 2027 window, down from the current December 1 to March 31 span, after nearly half of voters had backed eliminating the ban outright in a recent ballot question. Vice Chair Randy Block's amendment to push the end date to March 31 failed 3-5, with Chair Tariq Lucas and Councilor Pam Wright among those backing it.

A 40-year snow analysis cited during the meeting found six to seven storms of four inches or more in December over the past decade, compared with 11 in January alone. Block argued any real test "should" include "a portion of the city where we try it and not do it citywide," an approach the committee ultimately did not adopt.
