Other Committee · Meeting of October 14, 2026
Newton's Zoning and Planning Committee advanced a rezoning package to public hearing and leaned toward lengthening its demolition delay ordinance. The committee unanimously appointed Nancy Greenberg and Timothy LeBlanc to the city's Upper Falls and Auburndale historic district commissions and Sherry Golden as an alternate on the Newton Historical Commission. Planning staff reported Newton fields nearly 300 demolition applications a year, with 73 percent of its housing stock old enough to trigger the current 12-to-18-month delay, compared with Watertown's 24-month delay and roughly 25 to 30 annual applications.
Councilor Farrell said she wants homes preserved "less than $2 million" rather than rebuilt for "$3.5, $4 million," while Councilor Roach countered that a $2 million home generates about $10,000 a year more in taxes than a $1 million one. The committee voted unanimously to send a residential rezoning package covering Nonantum, Newton Corner and Newton Center parcels to a public hearing.
