Other Committee · Meeting of October 6, 2026
Newton's Land Use Committee approved three unrelated special permits by unanimous 8-0 votes Tuesday. Senior Planner Zach Melcher presented all three: an eight-foot retaining wall at 9 Nardell Road for the Panja family, an undersized lot at 62 Miller Road created when longtime owners Robert and Gay Freed agreed to deed a 204-square-foot strip to a neighbor rather than litigate an adverse-possession claim, and an amendment letting Opus Newton, a 174-unit senior living facility on Winchester Street, add roughly 25 valet parking spaces and five oversized directional signs. Chair Andrea Kelly said she'd "never seen" a boundary-sliver case like the Miller Road petition in her 10 years on the committee.
Councilor Pam Wright warned Opus's parking fix "won't" solve the problem long-term, saying "I think you will have parking issues coming up in the next few years," but voted yes anyway. Resident Ji Lin asked for stricter stormwater conditions on any future Miller Road construction, citing downhill flooding risk.
