Newton Land Use Committee Splits 4-3 on Historical Commission Alternate Appointment

NEWTON — August 11, 2025 — Newton's Land Use Committee forwarded two appointments to the Historical Commission on a split vote, sparking a heated debate over preservation credentials and end-of-term appointments. The committee unanimously recommended Scott Freedman, a three-year alternate and West Newton realtor, to a full seat expiring September 2, 2028, then voted 4-3 to advance Travis Salters of Auburndale as an alternate for the same term despite objections from Councilors Wright, Oliver, and Albright that Salters lacked any historic preservation background. Planning Director David Heath warned the commission is "operating at the bare minimum" for quorum, and Historical Commission Chair Doug Kess told the committee that under state statute, a missed quorum means all pending demolition applications are automatically approved. Councilor Alberght pushed back on suggestions the outgoing administration should pause appointments, saying the argument "sounds a lot like" the 2016 Supreme Court blockade.
