NEWTON — The Newton Land Use Committee held a live-work zoning petition after an hourlong debate and separately delayed a vote on 10-foot retaining walls near Bowen Elementary School's playing fields. Planning staffer Sandra Berman and Law Department attorney Jonah Temple presented 17 draft conditions for live-work units at 1100-1102 Beacon Street, an undefined use in Newton's zoning code. Councilor Sean Roach said the committee was "swirling on something without the administration saying this makes sense," while Councilor Randy Block insisted "I'm not gonna give on the parking." At 335 Langley Road, the committee withdrew an approval motion and voted unanimously to keep the hearing open after Councilor Steven Farrell raised runoff concerns tied to filling behind 10-foot walls.
The panel did approve, 7-0 each, special permits for a dormer and floor-area increase at 464 Dudley Road and a dormer amendment at 392 Cherry Street, plus ten appointments to neighborhood liaison and hospital advisory councils, with one reappointment, Chris Letourneau, passing with one member opposed after a 3-4 vote against holding it.
