The Newton Traffic Council voted to end a six-year trial letting Newton North students park free in the Austin Street lot.
Traffic Council · Meeting of June 11, 2026
NEWTON — The Newton Traffic Council voted to end a six-year trial letting Newton North students park free in the Austin Street lot. Chair David Kosas presented data showing the lot, once underused, now hits 90 percent occupancy since the Cooper Center senior center opened, and the council voted 5-0 to send $60 Tiger permit holders back to reserved spaces on Hull Street and Lowell Avenue. Members also voted 5-0 to start a trial barring older-adult permit holders from Highland Avenue's north side, while separately denying, 2-3, an accessible parking request at 17-19 Beach Street after the applicant failed to appear.
Resident Allie Schwartz won a 90-foot no-parking zone on Cynthia Road 5-0 after telling the council "it really restricts visibility and makes maneuvering space at the intersection really unsafe." The council also approved, all 5-0, changes on Suffolk Road, Otis Street and Lowell Avenue near Newton North High School.
