Traffic Council · Meeting of July 30, 2026

Newton's Traffic Council approved a 20 mph safety zone on Jasset Street and split 3-0 with two abstentions on removing parking for a Sunrise Senior Living project. Chair David Kozis and Councillor Block disagreed sharply over whether lower speed limits change driving habits, with Block arguing he is "hard-pressed to remember where these 20 mile-per-hour stretches are, much less personally obeying them." Resident Alex Nagel said he gathered nearly 90 signatures for calming measures near Stearns Park's playground. The council also approved, 4-1, new stop signs on Larchmont Avenue, 5-0 bus-only curb space near Boston College's Campus School, and 5-0 a resident-permit exception to Braeburn Road's parking ban.

Resident Susan Bathon said a semi-truck caused $5,000 in property damage trying to turn onto Charles Bank Road, prompting a 5-0 vote to clarify no-parking signage there.
