Traffic Council · Meeting of April 16, 2026
NEWTON — The Newton Traffic Council approved a seasonal parking ban on Berwick Road near Crystal Lake. The council, chaired by Transportation Coordinator David Kozis, voted 5-0 to prohibit parking on the street's north side from May 1 to October 31, citing a 2025 incident when resident Andrea Saldaña said "a fire truck could not get through the street." The change carries a 20-day appeal window running to May 6. Council members also voted 5-0 six separate times to ask MassDOT to drop regulatory speed limits of 30 or 35 mph on Watertown, Mill, Washington, Tremont, Cherry and Craft streets down to the citywide 25 mph standard.
A 2024 city study found speeds on Mill Street reaching "a max speed of 82 miles per hour," Councilor Mickley said. The council also cleared six completed or abandoned items from its docket with unanimous no-action votes.
