Zoning Panel Holds Off, Orders New Use Definitions
Newton's Zoning and Planning Committee held off on new zoning rules and ordered staff to define "live-work" space.
Other Committee · Meeting of May 11, 2026
Newton's Zoning and Planning Committee held off on new zoning rules and ordered staff to define "live-work" space. Executive Director Mike Lada told the panel the Newton Housing Authority manages more than 1,000 subsidized units for over 1,300 residents and pays roughly $800,000 a month in federal housing assistance, calling the program "notoriously underfunded." Councilor Oliver said undefined terms leave councilors unable to "guarantee" consistent rulings, pushing the committee to prioritize definitions for "live-work" and "work-live" uses. Planning staff separately flagged transformer placement conflicts at 790 Watertown Street, 145 Warren Street and 15 Lexington Street, and Councilor Gordon said an unresolved transformer dispute is keeping a Newton Highlands building vacant.
The committee unanimously reappointed Marcella Marino to the Economic Development Commission through November 30, 2028.
