NEWTON — The Newton Zoning and Planning Committee held a proposal to merge three historic district commissions after a straw poll showed five members opposed and three in favor. Director of Community Engagement and Inclusion Kerwin-Derrick said recruiting volunteers for the Auburndale, Newtonville and Upper Falls commissions has grown "harder and harder," sometimes costing residents money when meetings get canceled for lack of quorum. Upper Falls Historic District Commission chair Jeff Brooklyn countered, "my mama used to say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it," noting his panel voted five to two against the merger.

The committee voted unanimously to hold both related items pending written responses from Newtonville and Upper Falls. Separately, the panel unanimously recommended confirming Catherine as Newton's new director of planning and heard from Eversource representatives on why transformers keep landing inside zoning setbacks on projects like a 25-unit Walnut Street development.
