NEWTON — The Newton Land Use Committee approved a four-unit Beacon Street housing conversion and Aspen Avenue home additions but sent a Mechanic Street rebuild back for redesign. Councilor Sean Roach championed the Beacon Street project, arguing "if we want more starter homes in Newton, we need more modest residential multifamily buildings like this," while Councilors Randy Block and Tariq Lucas voted no over a parking waiver reducing required spaces from eight to five. That permit passed six to two.
On Mechanic Street, the committee voted eight to zero to keep the hearing open rather than approve an 81 percent facade ratio against a 60 percent cap, with Councilor Pam Wright calling the project's open-space claims overstated. The Aspen Avenue additions, raising floor-area ratio from 0.27 to 0.41 on a historic 1898 home, passed seven to one, with only Roach opposed.
