NEWTON — The Newton City Council's Public Safety and Transportation Committee voted 6-0 to hold its ICE response discussion after more than two hours of public testimony. Chair Tariq Lucas presided as more than three dozen residents, each given three minutes, debated how far the city should go beyond Mayor Laredo's executive order and welcoming city ordinance. Speaker Michelle Bannon-Steel said police on paid details, who collected over a million dollars in detail pay last year, still have "no written protocol" for ICE encounters.
Councilor Maria Greenberg, the item's sponsor, asked to defer substantive debate, saying she did not want to start "a brand new conversation" near 9:20 p.m. Chair Lucas said a follow-up meeting likely will not happen until after budget season.
