Other Committee · Meeting of June 8, 2026

Newton's Zoning and Planning Committee voted 6-0-1 to advance zoning language letting residents keep raised garden beds within required setbacks. Chair Lyle Baker pushed for a Monday resolution so the full council, which needs 16 votes, could act before summer recess. The committee settled on beds up to four feet tall, set back seven and a half feet from side lot lines and five feet from front and rear lines, with front beds capped at two feet unless outside the setback.

A dozen residents testified, mostly in favor; Newton Conservators' Catherine Howard called beds "innocuous compared to the permitted other types of things." Councillor Oliver dissented in spirit, saying setbacks are "white space" meant to stay clear. The committee separately heard that 242 of Newton's 646 subsidized housing units risk losing affordability over the next 35 years, with about 100 units at Cabot Park Village expiring this year.
