NEWTON — The Newton Traffic Council voted 5-0 to launch a trial parking ban on Greenwood Street near Newton South High School after residents described years of near-misses with buses and speeding student drivers. Director of Transportation Ned Codd proposed banning parking at all times on the south side and during 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. school hours on the north side; resident Paul Ash had pushed for a full, year-round ban, arguing "at all times means 24 hours a day, seven days a week." The council also approved a resident-permit parking change on Everett Street, added a stop sign at Ellison Road and Fenno Road, finalized Walnut Street pavement-marking changes, and converted four Hartford Street lot spaces to EV charging stalls. A second proposed stop sign on Fenno Road itself was held, with staff warning that stop signs are not meant to control speed.
