Newton's Zoning and Planning Committee voted to schedule a public hearing on an ordinance allowing raised garden beds in setbacks, tentatively set for May 11, while tabling a broader push to curb home teardowns. Planning Department chief of long-range planning Nora Colello told the committee that Newton's SR2 district accounted for "36 percent or 160" of teardowns studied from 2017 to 2024, and that torn-down homes averaged a floor area ratio near 0.2 versus a 0.38 allowance. Chief Zoning Code Official Jane Saniswaso warned that tightening FAR further "might actually increase teardowns." Chair Lyle Baker moved to hold the teardown item for more study, including the city's roughly 100 annual teardowns.

The garden bed draft, led by Councilor Albright, caps beds at 80 square feet and passed toward a hearing on a 4-0 vote.
